Funny Song to Play When Something Spills
Last night, my husband made dinner while I followed behind our one-year-old tornado, trying to minimize the destruction – or at least contain it to the kitchen.
Our baby's favorite pastime lately is pulling the nice serving platters out of their bottom cabinet and letting them clang to the floor. All other breakable items have been relocated to other cabinets out of reach, but this cabinet is the only one that will fit the huge platters.
We probably should just install a lock on the cabinet, but that would require planning ahead, which I can't seem to manage now that we're three kids into this crazy life.
And so every time she started making her way to that cabinet last night, I opened another cabinet to distract her.
"Charlie! Spatulas!"
"Hey, want a frying pan?"
"A whisk! Look, a whisk!"
Then while Ty cooked and I chased, we talked budget. How we can do better, what we can cut out, how to finish paying off the $25,000 hospital bill from when our toddler swallowed a dime in January.
You know, fun stuff. Our voices were tight, our sentences short.
And Then the Tornado Hit
Somewhere along the way, I got caught up in the conversation and lost track of Charlie.
I glanced around. She was near the forbidden cabinet but thankfully just quietly playing with something on the floor. Whew.
"Do you think we should…"
I trailed off because my eyes had finally focused on what she was quietly playing with. And it was coming from her diaper.
I rushed over and grabbed both her hands to keep her from touching anything, but then I didn't have a way to resolve the root issue of what was spilling out of her diaper.
"Uh, Ty?"
He looked over to where I was frozen, holding our baby's arms out to each side – and we locked eyes.
The surprise on his face pushed me over the edge, and the fear on mine must have done it for Ty. We laughed.
While Ty ran to grab a bag of wipes, I laughed so hard that Charlie's hands jiggled up and down, flinging poo everywhere. He went to work wiping up her hands, the mess that had breached the diaper border, and the flinged poo particles.
The whole time, we couldn't stop giggling. And it was the best thing that happened all night.

Don't Get Me Wrong
I'm not into epic diaper blowouts. But our fit of giggles took a tense situation for any marriage – discussing tight finances – and defused it completely.
After we got Charlie cleaned up and picked the conversation back up again, our tone was playful and light. A world of difference from the first installment of our conversation.
Everyone knows humor can be an antidote to tension, but here's what you may not know.
Research shows the happiest couples know how to handle conflict in a gentle way, and one of the number one techniques for doing that is with humor.
